RESIDENTS’ PROTESTS IGNORED

Residents gathered outside the Town Hall to protest about road closures in the ‘Mini Holland’ scheme

Residents protest ignored!

The recent protest by over 1,200 residents against the road closures in Walthamstow and Leyton showed that the Council’s Mini Holland plans, including closing local roads, does not have the support of all residents despite the Council saying that they had.

Protesters not against the scheme or cyclists, but against road closures
The protesters went out of their way to say that they were not against the scheme or cyclists, but against the road closures. The Council’s plans have succeeded in causing division and anger across the Borough. The closing of roads has forced vehicles onto the already congested main roads like Lea Bridge, Hoe Street, and Leyton High Road and has resulted in a massive slow down of traffic, increased congestion and increased pollution.

Bob Sullivan addressing protesters outside the Town Hall

Congestion and pollution bad for all
All of this is detrimental to residents, cyclists, pedestrians and bus users. Focus Team member Bob Sullivan, who was in the Town Hall listening to the Mini Holland debate, was appalled by the Labour Council restricting residents from hearing the debate, as they only allowed 12 protesters in, although the chamber can hold over a hundred. He was shocked by the arrogant, illiberal attitude with which Labour Councillors treated residents’ concerns. They were not prepared to review the Mini Holland plans despite residents’ requests and their own Labour MP’s request.

Council continues to ignore residents
They are, in fact, going to ignore residents and continue to put in similar divisive plans across Leyton, Leytonstone and Chingford!

PRESS RELEASE: WE MUST NOT ABANDON OUR HARD-WON HUMAN RIGHTS

Bob Sullivan and colleagues petitioning residents outside Coronation Gardens last Saturday

We must not abandon our hard-won human rights

Lib Dem campaigner Bob Sullivan urged the people of Leyton and Leytonstone to back a Liberal Democrat campaign to save the Human Rights Act.

So far more than 25,000 people have signed a petition calling on the Conservatives to scrap plans to abandon our commitment to human rights.

It comes as David Cameron said he would consult on the future of the Human Rights Act in the UK.

Now Bob Sullivan has urged local residents to speak up for legislation that has:

1. Stopped the state spying on us, supported peaceful protest and protected soldiers.
2. Helped rape victims, defended domestic violence victims and guarded against slavery.
3. Supported those in care, shielded press freedom and provided answers for grieving families.
4. Preserved our right to a fair trial, prevented indiscriminate stop-and-search and protected minorities.

Bob Sullivan said:

Our human rights laws have already achieved so much and we must not let the Tories trample all over them.

The Liberal Democrats blocked David Cameron from scrapping the Human Rights Act in Government and we must stop him again now.

That is why we need everyone everyone to get behind our campaign to stop the Conservatives riding roughshod over our hard-won rights.

LIBERAL DEMOCRATS ELECT NEW LEADER

Lib Dem Leader Tim Farron speaking at Conference

Long-serving former councillor Bob Sullivan welcomed the election of Tim Farron, MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, as the new leader of the Liberal Democrats.

Tim Farron said that under his leadership, the party would oppose the cuts to tax credits and other benefits in the Conservative’s budget and push for greater spending on infrastructure such as transport and broadband.

At his first speech as leader, Tim said,

If you care about human rights join us. If you think you shouldn’t have your emails snooped on join us. ‎If you think everyone deserves a decent home join us.

You can watch Tim’s inspirational speech here.

Bob Sullivan said,

These principles are at the heart of what drives the Liberal Democrats, our members and activists. More than ever Britain needs a party that will stand up for what we believe in, so we’re continuing our fightback and I’m asking local residents to be part of it.

There has never been a more important time to join the party.

Across the Country since the General Election 20,000 people have joined the party. Locally we have been joined by dozens of new activists and members this year, including a large number since it was announced that Tim Farron was elected. The Liberal Democrats have also seen stunning election victories at local council by-elections across the UK, beating both Labour and the Conservatives.

If you would like to join please go to www.libdems.org.uk and join the FOCUS Teams’ fightback.
